Midnight Suns Baseball Club registration and annual meeting - Meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the Floyd Dryden Middle School library to sign up. The Midnight Suns program is for youth baseball players and they must be 11 years old by Aug. 1, 2005, to join this year. Juneau-Douglas High School Dance Team clinics/tryouts - The JDHS Dance Team will hold a series of clinics leading up to team tryouts next month. Clinics are open to all JDHS students and will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7; from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 9; from 7-9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 11; and from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12. Juneau-Douglas High School volleyball - Juneau Invitational Volleyball Extravaganza (JIVE): The Crimson Bears will host Ketchikan, Sitka, Mount Edgecumbe, Metlakatla, Petersburg, Wrangell and other teams TBA for this annual tournament at the JDHS main and auxiliary gyms. The tournament features round-robin pool play on Friday afternoon and night and continuing on Saturday morning. Those records will be used to seed teams into placement matches on Saturday afternoon, with the championship match usually starting about 7:30-8 p.m. on Saturday.

Southeast Road Runners - East Glacier Trail Tangle: Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Powerline Trailhead (on Gladstone St., the last street just past Garnet St. off Mendenhall Loop Rd.) for a 10 a.m. race start. Gastineau Channel Little League annual meeting - The GCLL's annual meeting will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 3, in the Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School library. Juneau Parks and Recreation Women's Classic Basketball League - Registration forms are due by Oct. 22 for this league, which is open to women who want to play team basketball but are older, new to the game or have limited time available due to other commitments. Aggressive play is strongly discouraged. Preseason practices begin in November, with one game a week on Wednesdays - 10 games total - through Feb. 2. The cost is $47.25 per player. Note to waterfowl hunters - Hunters seeking waterfowl hunting permits to take waterfowl, snipe or cranes on the Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge can obtain the permits at Western Auto, Rayco Sales or at the Douglas office of the Alaska Department of Fish & Game. The permit is meant as an orientation for hunters using the refuge and also allows ADF&G to collect duck hunting effort and harvest data. Mount Jumbo preschool open gym - Preschool open gyms for children ages 1-6 and an adult parent or caregiver take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through April. There must be at least one adult present for every four kids. There is a $1 per child fee, or punchcards for $10 and $50 can be bought at the gym, which is located at 909 4th Street in Douglas. Tricycles, mats, balls, a Little Tykes climber, building blocks and a kid-sized basketball hoop are available. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - New climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center guided hikes - The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center offers twice-daily, one-hour guided hikes on the Trail of Time. The free hikes, led by a naturalist from the visitor center, meet at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the flagpoles in the first parking lot. Info: Wayne Ward, 789-6640.
Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
