Gary Boyd, 57, left, a retired Army National Guard helicopter pilot from Anchorage, and his friend Dennis Hall spread out the hide of a brown bear last week. Boyd shot the bear on Tuesday with his .44-caliber handgun in defense of his life on trails at Fort Richardson Army Base.
