Sheryl Weinberg appointed executive director of SERRC

JUNEAU - Southeast Regional Resources Center Board of Directors recently appointed Sheryl Weinberg to the agency's top spot.

Weinberg has worked in public education since 1976 and has been employed at SERRC since 1993. Her responsibilities include supervising 100 staff members who work out of offices in Anchorage and Juneau, along with traveling the state to deliver educational services, overseeing some 100 grants that affect thousands of Alaskan students every year, and creating and implementing programs that will improve student achievement.

The center provides direct student services, school and district support services, and community services to students of all ages throughout the state.

Small-businesscenter kicks off fall schedule of classes

JUNEAU - The Juneau Small Business Development Center kicks off its fall schedule of business classes with a two-evening class, "Starting Your Own Business," from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday evenings, Oct. 3 and 10, in the Juneau Empire building, third floor conference room.

Attendees will be guided through the basics of starting a business by center director Jackie Stewart and program specialist Karen Wilke, along with community professionals who will share their knowledge of business start-up steps, marketing, record keeping, risk management, commercial banking, legal forms of business and other key elements to consider before starting a business.

Registration is required in advance by calling 463-3789. The two-evening class is $35. Scholarships are available for low-income participants.

Training focuses on negotiating skills for women entrepreneur

JUNEAU - The Women's Network for Entrepreneurial Training monthly meeting will be from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Tuesday in the Juneau Empire building third floor conference room.

Jackie Stewart, director of the Juneau Small Business Development Center, will present "Getting to Yes: Negotiating Techniques That Work," from noon to 1 p.m.

Stewart will discuss negotiating at work and at home, teaching techniques to reach agreement through the development of win-win solutions while building positive relationships that focus on mutual gain. Attendees are invited to bring a brown bag lunch and are encouraged to arrive early and stay afterwards for networking opportunities with other business professionals.
