Chugiak apartment fire displaces 27 families

ANCHORAGE - The American Red Cross of Alaska said 27 families have been displaced by a fire at a Chugiak apartment complex.

Most of the damage at the three-story building on the Old Glenn Highway was limited to a single apartment.

But the building's power and other utilities were cut off, forcing tenants to evacuate.

The fire was reported at about 11 p.m. Friday.

Chugiak Volunteer Fire Department Chief Bruce Bartley says it started in the furnace room.

He said something went wrong with the electrical feed into the building.

The Red Cross said it could be a few days before power and water is restored.
