Capital city woman joins cancer walk

Staci Stevens of Juneau is the only Alaskan participating in a 60-mile California walk to raise funds for breast cancer research.

The walk is the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day, which begins Oct. 17 near Los Angeles. Proceeds help fund cutting-edge medical research and outreach programs for women and men suffering from breast cancer. Stevens needs to raise a minimum of $1,800 in donations in order to participate.

A chili and spaghetti feed, followed by a dance, will help purchase a ticket for her airfare to and from California. The chili feed is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., Saturday, at Louie's Douglas Inn, 915 Third St., Douglas. Any remaining funds from the event will be donated to Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day.

"I've participated in bike-a-thons and walk-a-thons before, but I have never had to raise this much money before," Stevens said.

She undertook this challenge in honor of her mother, Myke Augustus-Austin.

"My Mom had breast cancer when she was 34 24 years ago. She had to go Outside for radiation treatment. I went through all that with her, and it made me aware of breast cancer issues," Stevens said.
