Boy injured in crash slowly recovering

Jeremy Nelson, the 9-year-old pedestrian injured in a rollover accident Sunday, remains in a drug-induced coma in a Seattle hospital, his mother said.

But she is confident that he is improving.

"The pressure in his brain has lowered. There is brain activity when we are in the room talking to him," mother Debbie Stevens said this morning. The coma is intended to keep Jeremy still and out of pain.

"The road rash on the side of his face and his arm is healing quickly, and he is looking more like Jeremy as the swelling goes down," she said.

Jeremy's father, Craig Nelson, is also visiting his son daily at Harborview Medical Center, where he is in the pediatric intensive care ward.

"He looks like an octopus with all the things going into him," Nelson said, "but we are hoping to wean him off the drugs."
