Photo: Camels out

Posted: Wednesday, September 29, 2004

A workman on the scow Skookum Yarder pulls a camel - a log used as a fender for docking ships - out of the water last week at the Steamship Wharf. In the fall, the camels are hauled up by crane and set down atop the dolphins - the clusters of piles to which vessels are moored. There the camel will spend the winter next to the bollard - the large post on the dolphin to which ships' lines are made fast.
