JDHS Dance Team to hold clinics, tryout

The Juneau-Douglas High School Dance Team will hold a series of training clinics next month, leading up to tryouts for the upcoming season.

Clinics will be held in the Marie Drake gym from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7, on Monday, Oct. 11, and on Tuesday, Oct. 12. There also will be a session from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 9.

Tryouts will be held from 5 p.m. until completion on Wednesday, Oct. 13, also in the Marie Drake gym.

Those interested in trying out for the team should try to attend as many clinic sessions as possible. The clinics and tryouts are open to all JDHS students, and more information is available by calling Christa Baxter at 364-3502.

Coxe claims state sporter/hunter rifle title

Ray Coxe claimed the title in the NRA-registered 2004 Alaska State Sporter/Hunter Rifle Championships held Sept. 19 at the Hank Harmon Rifle Range in Juneau.

Coxe, 72, used an open-sight rifle to win the 200-yard, four-position event with a score of 311 out of a possible 320 points and 12 Xs (hitting the tiny cross in the middle of the bull's-eye) out of 32 shots. Coxe is a retired colonel from the U.S. Army National Guard and owns an outdoors store in Juneau that sells firearms and other hunting supplies.

The event featured eight slow-fire shots each in the standing and prone positions, and eight rapid-fire shots each in the sitting and prone positions. A perfect score was 80 points and eight Xs in each position.

Mal Menzies took second place with a score of 308 points and nine Xs, while Lynn Bennett was third with 307 points and nine Xs. Menzies and Bennett also used open-sight rifles.

Linda Flynn took fourth place with 301 points and six Xs, while Brad Flynn was fifth with 298 points and seven Xs. The Flynns both used scoped rifles. Kirk McBride, who was competing in his first match, took sixth place with 254 points and one X.
