• Juneau Community Schools open gyms - Basketball, volleyball and soccer open gyms for adults are available several times a week. Basketball and volleyball open gyms are held Fridays and Sundays from 7-9 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Soccer open gyms are held Saturdays from 6-8 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School and Sundays from 6:45-8:45 p.m. at Floyd Dryden Middle School. • Juneau Youth Football League - PeeWee Division: Seahawks vs. Cowboys, 6 p.m. Senior Division: Cougars vs. Sitka, 8 p.m. All games at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park.

Friday-Saturday, Oct. 1-2

• Juneau-Douglas High School volleyball - Juneau Invitational Volleyball Extravaganza (JIVE): The Crimson Bears will host Ketchikan, Sitka, Mount Edgecumbe, Petersburg, Wrangell, Haines, Craig and Cordova for this annual tournament at the JDHS main and auxiliary gyms. The tournament features round-robin pool play starting at about 3 p.m. Friday and continuing at about 9 a.m. Saturday morning. Those records will be used to seed teams into placement matches on Saturday afternoon, with the championship match starting about 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Saturday, Oct. 2

• Juneau Youth Football League - Pee-Wee Division: Titans vs. Rams, 10 a.m. Junior Division: Huskies vs. Badgers, noon, and Spartans vs. Hawkeyes, 2 p.m. Senior Division: Bruins vs. Hurricanes, 4 p.m. All games at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park.

• Southeast Road Runners - East Glacier Trail Tangle: Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Powerline Trailhead (on Gladstone St., the last street just past Garnet St. off Mendenhall Loop Rd.) for a 10 a.m. race start. The course includes the Powerline Trail, the Trail of Time and the East Glacier Trail, and is about 6 to 6.2 miles long. Info: Steve Parker, 789-4950.

• Juneau Soccer Club registration - Registration for the 2004-05 season is underway, and the season opens on Friday, Oct. 1. The JSC is for youth soccer players who want to develop their skills and learn more about the sport. There are developmental and competitive teams for students in grades 4-12, and players are on teams with others of the same gender and age. • Volunteer youth basketball coaches needed - Coaches are needed to help develop players in the Juneau Parks and Rec youth basketball league. The season runs from Oct. 2 through Dec. 11, so potential coaches need to make contact with Parks and Rec this week. Two coaches are needed for age 14-18 boys teams, one coach is needed for an age 12-13 boys team and a co-coach is needed for an age 10-11 boys team. Volunteer applications and background checks are required before working with a team. • Gastineau Channel Little League annual meeting - The GCLL's annual meeting will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 3, in the Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School library. All who were involved in the 2004 season are welcome to attend. There will be a report from each officer about the past season, as well as an election to fill board vacancies. • Midnight Suns Baseball Club registration and annual meeting - Meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the Floyd Dryden Middle School library to sign up. The Midnight Suns program is for youth baseball players and they must be 11 years old by Aug. 1, 2005, to join this year. • Juneau-Douglas High School Dance Team clinics/tryouts - The JDHS Dance Team will hold a series of clinics leading up to team tryouts next month. Clinics are open to all JDHS students and will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7; from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 9; from 7-9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 11; and from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12. • Juneau Douglas Ice Association youth hockey registration - Registration for the youth hockey program (ages 5-18) and the learn hockey program (ages 4-18) is in progress. • Juneau Parks and Recreation Adult Ordway Basketball team registration - Registration will be held on Thursday, Oct. 14, at 5 p.m. in the Assembly Chambers at City Hall. Late registration will be held on Friday, Oct. 15, from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the Juneau Parks and Recreation office. League play begins Nov. 7 and continues through the first week of February. • Youth open gyms - Meet from 8-11 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. Youth open gyms are free for students in grades 5-12. Info: Community schools director Joyce Kitka, 463-1700, Ext. 327.

• Mount Jumbo preschool open gym - Preschool open gyms for children ages 1-6 and an adult parent or caregiver take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through April. There must be at least one adult present for every four kids. There is a $1 per child fee, or punchcards for $10 and $50 can be bought at the gym, which is located at 909 4th Street in Douglas. Tricycles, mats, balls, a Little Tykes climber, building blocks and a kid-sized basketball hoop are available. • Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - New climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. • Basketball/volleyball court rentals available - The Juneau Community Schools program has basketball/volleyball court rental times available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. The cost to rent the court is $20 per hour, which must be paid at the time of rental. This is for adult activities only. Info: Juneau Community Schools, 463-1717.

• Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
