ANCHORAGE - Anchorage's Department of Health and Human Services plans to give Mayor Dan Sullivan its recommendations this week on how to better serve the homeless.
Diane Ingle, the department's director, said homelessness isn't a new problem, but recent deaths have raised concern about how many people may need help with winter on the way.
More than a dozen homeless people have been found dead in Anchorage this year.
Jacob Otten was found unconscious in a homeless camp Saturday morning. The 39-year-old later died at the hospital.
Ingle said the department has an overflow plan in place for shelters should they see a sudden influx of people when temperatures drop.
