Suicide threat closes local road

Posted: Monday, September 30, 2002

JUNEAU - Police shut down the North Douglas road to Eaglecrest for nearly three hours Sunday while they talked to a man threatening to kill himself.

A man, 49, whose name is not being released, called police from a cell phone around 9:15 a.m. saying he was thinking of ending his life, said Sgt. Ben Coronell.

Police were unable to reach the man before 9:38 a.m. where he sat in his truck at the side of the road because he did not tell dispatchers exactly where he was when he called 911.

The man was intoxicated, Coronell said, and had been speaking with his estranged wife on the phone before he called police. He also told police he had taken pills, said Coronell.

Police closed in on the man around noon, determined he did not have a weapon and took him to Bartlett Regional Hospital for evaluation, Coronell said.

The road was open again by 12:20 p.m.
