A 35-year-old woman died Tuesday night after being struck by a pickup while walking in a west Juneau crosswalk, police said.
Angela N. Bradley, a housekeeper at the Baranof Hotel, died after the truck struck her in the crosswalk at the intersection of Douglas Highway and Cordova Street, according to police.
Baranof Assistant General Manager Steve Hamilton said Bradley was a valued employee and that the staff relied on her knowledge of sign language.
"She was a very capable person," Hamilton said. "She was a great lady."
The driver of a 2001 Dodge pickup was traveling on Douglas Highway, headed toward the Douglas Bridge, when the left side of the truck hit Bradley around 7:07 p.m., police said in a news release.
Police were unable to identify the driver, who proceeded through the intersection. Capt. Tom Porter said police are not classifying the accident as a hit-and-run unless additional witnesses indicate that the driver was aware of hitting Bradley and intentionally left the scene.
She was taken to Bartlett Regional Hospital where she was later declared dead.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 586-0600. The investigation is continuing.
Bradley moved from her hometown of Sitka to Juneau about two years ago for employment, her brother, Harry Bradley, said. He did not know where his sister was going the night of the accident, but said she did not drive. She lived in the Mendenhall Valley, he said.
"She didn't have a lot, but she did share what she had," he said. "She was kind, caring and considerate."
Bradley worked in the housekeeping department of the Baranof from December 2002 through June of 2003, Hamilton said. She went to Sitka over the summer, returned to the hotel that September and has been there ever since, he said.
She worked in the laundry department, was a room attendant and was recently promoted to assistant housekeeper, Hamilton said.
The hotel recently hired a deaf woman for its laundry room, and Bradley was the only one who had American Sign Language skills to communicate with her, he said.
Bradley's body was flown to Anchorage for organ and tissue collection, because she was a donor, her brother said.
She will later be transported to Sitka for cremation. Funeral arrangements with Prewitt Funeral Home in Sitka are pending, he said.
A single mother, she is survived by two daughters, Jamie and Leandrea, and two sons, Robert and Michael. Besides Harry, she had six other siblings: Marie Gordon, Clara Gray, John, James and Anna Bradley, and a twin, Allan.
