JUNEAU - The driver in last week's police chase was listed in critical but stable condition Monday, according to hospital staff.

Victor Powell, 38, was transported to a trauma center in Seattle after he was knocked unconscious Thursday when the blue Ford van he was driving crashed through the guardrail at the intersection of Vanderbilt Hill Road and Egan Drive, according to police. The van landed about 150 feet onto the tidelands of the Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge.

The crash came after Powell led police on a lengthy chase, after he allegedly drove toward a police officer after striking a woman with the van, police said.

The victim, 41-year-old Michelle Bennett, was released from Bartlett Regional Hospital on Sunday, according to a family member.
