Comment sought on Eaglecrest work

JUNEAU - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is asking for public comment on proposed improvements at the Eaglecrest Ski Area.

The city of Juneau is applying for permits to build a Nordic ski track, a beginner's chairlift, and race training center, and a waterworks access trail.

The project area won't harm essential fish habitat and doesn't have historic properties on it, according to the Corps. Eleven existing culverts on the unimproved Nordic ski trail will be replaced in the plan.

The city changed its plans to mitigate harm to wetlands. The Nordic trail and waterworks access trail were narrowed. The race training center and chairlift were located in areas of existing fill. And the race training center was designed with three stories instead of one or two to give it a smaller footprint.

The agency is accepting public comment until Oct. 10. Contact Randal Vigil at 790-4490 or, and reference POA-2005-1171.
