What would Jesus do?

Posted: Monday, October 01, 2001

In the past few weeks I have heard God's name used quite often, but I have rarely seen Jesus quoted, nor heard the question "What would Jesus do?" The following are the words of Jesus from the Revised Standard Version of the Bible:

Matthew 5:9: "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God."

Matthew 5:21-22: "You have heard that it was said to the men of old, 'You shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment. But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be liable to the hell of fire."

Matthew 5:38-39: "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also."

Matthew 5:43-45: "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust."

Matthew 26: 52: "Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword."

Luke 6:32: "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them."

Luke 6: 36-37: "Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven."

John 15:12 "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you."

John 14:24: "He who does not love me does not keep my words; and the word which you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me."

Of course this is all ridiculous, right? Jesus' words are not reasonable or practical, not really meant for us, and certainly not possible to follow. They're out of context, from another time. Idealistic foolishness!

1 Corinthians 3: 9: "For the wisdom of this world is folly with God."
