Organization makes donation to music program

During the 2003-2004 school year, Auke Bay Community Kids Organization donated $4,862.34 to the Auke Bay Elementary School for instruments for the music program.

The organization was organized on Oct. 1, 1953. Maybelle Horton was the senior advisor and organizer with Elizabeth (Betty) Spaulding as the treasurer. The organization was open to all young people in the Juneau area and held a membership of over 50 active teenagers.

Auke Bay Community Kids was re-organized in 1960. The code of ethics began with "the instilling of a sense of responsibility within ourselves and towards others to learn and practice good citizenship." The organization held many youth activities that included garage sales, non-alcoholic dances and parties as well as a community Easter-egg hunt for all youngsters.

About a year ago, the board members met and decided to donate the monies in the organization's savings account toward a youth program. All of the board members conducted interviews and searched for the organization that best suited the requirement given by the Auke Bay Community Kids Organization.

The organization chose the music program at Auke Bay School. Judy Haffner said, "We have come back to our roots, and helping young people is what our organization was founded on."

Nonprofit group retires this year's state flags

The 50 state flags, which have been flying again along Egan Drive between the Juneau-Douglas Bridge and Marine Park all summer, were taken down Saturday, Sept. 25. Since the flags only last one season, new flags are put up each year.

The flags have been flying since 1978 because of the efforts of the Friends of the Flags, a nonprofit group that raises and cares for the flags.

Many Juneauites have come from other places and seeing that flag from their home state flying downtown often brings fond memories of their former home. Tourists also enjoy seeing their state flag flying over Alaska's capital city.

This year's flag crew was Stephen Cosgrove, Paul Hambry, Jim Akins, Michael Orelove, George Fisher and Bob Van Slyke.

"Special thanks again to Tyler Rentals for use of the lift truck," Akins said. "They have supported us since the beginning."

Buying new flags each year allows us to keep current with flag changes. On Friday, April 25, 2003, the State of Georgia adopted yet another new flag, to replace the flag adopted in 2001, which replaced the Confederate Battle flag adopted in 1956. "We will try to have the correct current flag for Georgia next year," Orelove said. "Unless they change it again."
