... to Douglas Samaritans

The good Samaritans who materialized to offer assistance following the tragic accident near Breeze In on Douglas Highway on Tuesday evening deserve our thanks and praise.

Half a dozen people appeared as if on cue to shelter the victim from the rain, to help direct traffic and maintain a semblance of order until emergency personnel arrived.

Passing motorists too did their part by proceeding in an orderly fashion to keep traffic congestion to a minimum.

It is gratifying to live in a community where helping and volunteering in difficult situations is not left to the "other guy."

It takes a community

Thank you to all the businesses that have contributed to the success of Recovery Month.

This September we celebrated Recovery Month by hosting a poster competition at Johnson Youth Center. Nine extremely talented residents enrolled in the treatment program at JYC and created the posters. This project was a collaborated effort between National Council of Alcoholism and Drug Dependence and Johnson Youth Center in an attempt to outreach youth just entering the court system. The posters were displayed for the first time on Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, in Judge Froehlich's courtroom during juvenile court proceedings. They depict some very real and heart-wrenching emotions of what living with addiction and its consequences can be like. They also illustrate the hope these young men have for their future.

A special thanks to Capital Records, Hearthside Books, The Fireweed Shop, The Ravens Journey, Frontier Gifts and Borderline for their generous support. The gifts were passed on to the artists as prizes for participating in the project and were greatly appreciated. Due to confidentiality the artist's real names cannot be disclosed, but we would like to again acknowledge the insight and creativity that each artist put into his work.

Clean and sober, these nine young men appear to have immense potential; it is our sincere hope that their messages will have a profound and positive impact on the youth that witness them.
