Midnight Suns Fastpitch Softball Association fall tryouts - Fall tryouts for the 2005 season take place on Saturday, Oct. 2, Sunday, Oct. 3, and Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the Riverbend Elementary School gym. On Saturday, tryout times are 12:30 p.m. for ages 16U and 18U girls, 1:30 p.m. for age 14U, 3 p.m. for age 12U and 4:30 p.m. for age 10U. On Sunday, the times are 12:30 p.m. for age 10U girls, 1:30 p.m. for age 12U, 3 p.m. for age 14U and 4:30 p.m. for age 16U. On Wednesday, there is an all-ages make-up tryout at 6:30 p.m., a parent meeting at 7:30 p.m., and at 8 p.m. team calendar pictures will be taken for all ages. Juneau-Douglas High School volleyball - Juneau Invitational Volleyball Extravaganza (JIVE): The Crimson Bears will host Ketchikan, Sitka, Mount Edgecumbe, Petersburg, Wrangell, Haines, Craig and Cordova for this annual tournament at the JDHS main and auxiliary gyms. The tournament features round-robin pool play starting at about 3 p.m. Friday and continuing at about 9 a.m. Saturday morning. Those records will be used to seed teams into placement matches on Saturday afternoon, with the championship match starting about 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Southeast Road Runners - East Glacier Trail Tangle: Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Powerline Trailhead (on Gladstone St., the last street just past Garnet St. off Mendenhall Loop Rd.) for a 10 a.m. race start. Juneau Soccer Club registration - Registration for the 2004-05 season is underway, and the season opens on Friday, Oct. 1. The JSC is for youth soccer players who want to develop their skills and learn more about the sport. There are developmental and competitive teams for students in grades 4-12, and players are on teams with others of the same gender and age. Volunteer youth basketball coaches needed - Coaches are needed to help develop players in the Juneau Parks and Rec youth basketball league. The season runs from Oct. 2 through Dec. 11, so potential coaches need to make contact with Parks and Rec this week. Two coaches are needed for age 14-18 boys teams, one coach is needed for an age 12-13 boys team and a co-coach is needed for an age 10-11 boys team. Volunteer applications and background checks are required before working with a team. Gastineau Channel Little League annual meeting - The GCLL's annual meeting will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 3, in the Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School library. Midnight Suns Baseball Club registration and annual meeting - Meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the Floyd Dryden Middle School library to sign up. The Midnight Suns program is for youth baseball players and they must be 11 years old by Aug. 1, 2005, to join this year. Juneau-Douglas High School Dance Team clinics/tryouts - The JDHS Dance Team will hold a series of clinics leading up to team tryouts next month. Clinics are open to all JDHS students and will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7; from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 9; from 7-9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 11; and from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12. Augustus Brown Pool/American Red Cross Lifeguard instructor class - A lifeguard instructor class will be held Thursday-Sunday, Oct. 28-31, at the Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool. The class is open to those age 17-older with a current Fundamental of Instructor Training certificate. Participants must pass a pre-course written and skills test that will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - New climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Juneau Community Schools open gyms - Basketball, volleyball and soccer open gyms for adults are available several times a week. Basketball and volleyball open gyms are held Fridays and Sundays from 7-9 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Soccer open gyms are held Saturdays from 6-8 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School and Sundays from 6:45-8:45 p.m. at Floyd Dryden Middle School. Recreational badminton - Auke Bay group: This group meets from 8-10 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays at the Auke Bay Community School gym. Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center guided hikes - The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center offers twice-daily, one-hour guided hikes on the Trail of Time. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
