JUNEAU - Local Toastmasters from Juneau and Ketchikan will participate in an areawide speech contest.

The public is invited to attend the competition on Friday at the Valley Senior Center, 9059 Atlin Drive. The social hour begins at 6 p.m., with the contest following.

There are two categories: humorous speech and table topics. Table topics refers to impromptu or extemporaneous speaking in which contestants are given a question they need to answer spontaneously.

Juneau has two Toastmasters clubs - Taku Toastmasters, which meets at noon on Mondays in the Federal Building, and the Valley Toastmasters, which meets at 6:10 a.m. on Tuesdays at the Valley Senior Center. Ketchikan's First City Toastmasters meets at noon on Thursdays at the First Presbyterian Church. Meetings are open to anyone.

Each club will send their club winners to participate in one of the two contests. Winners will attend the Yukon Alaska Council of Toastmasters Conference in Anchorage on Oct. 24-26.

The mission of the Toastmasters club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every individual member has the opportunity to develop oral communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.
