Late wildfire burning in Kenai refuge

Posted: Thursday, October 01, 2009

KENAI - A rare autumn wildfire is burning in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge.

Andre Dulac, spokesman on the Skilak River fire, said the fire is only about 20 acres, but it's notable because of how late it is in the wildfire season. He said fire managers consider it a good research opportunity.

The blaze is being allowed to burn and is not expected to spread beyond an isolated hill on the far eastern side of Skilak Lake.

Fire investigators discovered an old campfire, and believe it caused the blaze.
