As a swimming instructor, former assistant pool manager and lifeguard, I think it is very important for any community to provide first-class swim instruction and recreational swimming for all ages. Augustus Brown Pool has been a great facility, staffed professionally, and can continue to do this for years to come. As our community grows, so should the opportunities for all citizens. A new pool would open up new recreational and instructional opportunities that are more accessible to a larger part of the community, also providing well paying job opportunities for our youth and adults.
A facility of this nature should be developed now, as building prices will only continue to escalate. Parks and Rec should be congratulated on keeping the current pool admission affordable for middle- and lower-income families. It has been one of the better recreational deals in town.
My only concern is that a facility of this nature does not price out the lower-income families like some other recreational facilities have done, like Eaglecrest. If this concern is kept in mind by the powers that be, then I believe this is a great opportunity for all of Juneau.
