Pool helps youths

Letter to the editor

I plan to vote for the new pool in the valley on Oct. 4. The majority of the population lives in the valley, and they need more convenient access to an affordable form of recreation and exercise that is available year-round regardless of the weather. I live in West Juneau and, therefore, have nothing to gain by its being built.

My reasons for voting for the second pool are personal. My son was and remains a swimmer. Through his association with the pool and being part of the Glacier Swim Club and Juneau-Douglas High School Swim/Dive team, he gained a high level of fitness, a strong work ethic and sense of personal responsibility, high self-esteem, and lifelong friends that are as close as family to him.

He also got a job there. These are assets he will carry throughout his life.

If there was a pool in the valley, I believe these same sorts of opportunities and rewards would be available to more of our Juneau youth. Those rewards are immeasurable in value and, as a parent, I feel would be well worth the price tag.

Please join me in voting for the pool.
