CHARLESTON, Ore. - The check is in the mail, honest.
West Coast salmon fishermen who have applied for some of the $100 million in federal disaster aid recently made available can expect to see a check soon, with the money going into the mail on Wednesday.
The Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission, which distributes the relief money, says it got about 500 applications from fishermen, processors and charter businesses in Washington, Oregon and California.
Congress authorized $170 million in relief funding for the fishing industry after the commission closed the salmon season this year, and the first $100 million is expected to go quickly.
