Today, Oct. 2

• Juneau-Douglas High School Dance Team tryouts - The Juneau-Douglas High School Dance Team will begin tryouts with its first training clinic at 7-9 p.m. Oct. 2 at Auke Bay Elementary School. Both JDHS and Thunder Mountain High School students eligible. Attend the first clinic for more information. Those interested in trying out are encouraged to attend as many training sessions as possible. Sessions are as follows: 10 a.m.-noon Oct. 4 at JDHS main gym; 7-9 p.m. Oct. 6 and 7 at TMHS main gym. • Midnight Suns Baseball annual registration meeting - The Midnight Suns Baseball Club will hold their annual registration meeting 1-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Dimond Park Field House upstairs meeting area. • Juneau Jumpers open tryouts - The Juneau Jumpers will hold tryouts from 3 to 5 p.m. Oct. 5 at Glacier Valley Elementary School. Anyone in grades 3-12 is welcome to participate. • Juneau Soccer Club season kick-off - Returning Juneau Soccer Club players can bring registration and fees, while new players can check it out at the season kick-off event on Sunday at the Dimond Park Fieldhouse. Boys and girls from under age 8-9 attend 9-10 a.m., boys and girls from under age 10-12 attend 10 a.m.-noon, boys and girls from under age 13-15 attend noon-2 p.m., girls under age 16-19 attend 2-4 p.m., and boys under age 16-19 attend 4-6 p.m. Bring balls, shin guards and appropriate footwear. • Adult Ordway Basketball Team registration - Juneau Parks and Recreation will register teams at 5 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Assembly Chambers. • Indoor soccer coaches needed - Juneau Parks & Recreation is in need of volunteer coaches for the upcoming youth season, which runs Oct. 4 through Dec. 6. If you are knowledgeable in the game of soccer and enjoy working with youth, consider volunteering. There is a need for coaches or co-coaches in the following divisions: 5-6 downtown, 5-6 Mendenhall Valley, 7-9 Mendenhall Valley, 12-13 downtown/Mendenhall Valley combined and 14-18 downtown/Mendenhall Valley combined. • Women's Classic Basketball League - The Women's Classic Basketball League is for women who enjoy basketball and want to play for fun, on an organized team, but with women who are a "little older," new to the game or have less time due to kids, jobs or other commitments. Aggressive play is strongly discouraged in this league.

Registration forms are due by Oct. 24. Pre-season practices will begin in November, followed by games which will be played through Feb. 4. Teams play once a week on Wednesday for a total of 10 games for the season. Cost is $47.25 per player, which includes tax and covers the costs of the player fee and a share of the team fee, plus use of a numbered jersey for each player. Players can register with Parks and Rec. Staff and volunteers will put teams together. • JDHS turf field available - The turf field by Juneau-Douglas High School is available for community use. The charge for reserving the field is $5 per hour for nonprofit youth groups, $10 per hour for nonprofit adult groups and $15 per hour for all other groups. Individuals and groups are asked to keep food, drink, gum and animals off the field. Info: Community Schools at 523-1773.

• Juneau Skating Club - The Juneau Skating Club's first session of the year begins Sept. 19. Classes meet once a week for six weeks. Group lessons meet either Friday nights 6:30-7:30 p.m. or Saturday mornings 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Hockey skills classes start Sept. 21 at 10:30 a.m. Registration forms and other information are available at www.juneauskatingclub.org or at the rink. • Treadwell Ice Arena open - Treadwell Ice Arena is open for the 2008-09 skating season. There are sign-ups for Group Skating lessons with the Juneau Skating Club. Six-weeks for $75. JDIA Youth Hockey begins the week of Sept. 22. JAHA Adult Hockey begins the week of Sept. 29. Discover Hockey Sunday, Sept. 14, 2:45-5 p.m. Free. • Basketball and volleyball court rentals available - Juneau Community Schools has basketball and volleyball court rental times available 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. The cost to rent the court is $20 per hour, which must be paid at the time of rental. This is for adult activities only. Info: 463-1717.

• Dzantik'i Heeni open gym - Community Schools in cooperation with the PEP grant is sponsoring open gyms at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School on Saturdays from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. for youth in grades 6-12. There is no charge and youth are encouraged to bring a basketball or volleyball. Info: Community Schools, 523-1774.

• Evening masters swimming program - The Augustus Brown pool hosts a twice-weekly evening masters swimming program. The program will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and is designed to promote and improve the physical and mental well-being of adults age 19 and older.
