Title/firm: Co-owner, Music in the Micks

Services: Music in the Micks offers a comprehensive line of guitars, including top industry names such as Fender, Guild, Ovation, Aria, Applause, Takamine and Danelectro. It also offers bass guitars, amplifiers, electric keyboards and drum sets. Mick Rarick added he will special-order anything a customer likes and will be very competitive on price. The store recently added rock-oriented compact discs and tapes to its inventory.

Biographical info: Rarick, 43, has been a lifelong rock musician and writer. For 15 years he toured with the band Northstar, which has released three recordings. Rarick is working on a fourth.

"I was the manager. I booked everything," Rarick said. "It's paid a lot of dividends I would not have expected."

For instance, he said, the knowledge has come in handy in running his current business.

"I learned leadership skills that carried over," he said. "I learned how to manage personalities."

When the former Music in the Mix liquidated in early summer of 1999, Rarick - who managed that store for two years - opened a new business with his partner, Emmy Krauss, in the same spot with virtually the same name.

"When they liquidated, I quit," Rarick said. "But I knew it could work. I had two years on the payroll learning the ropes. I knew what could sell in Juneau."

He said he kept all the top-name guitar manufacturers, but sold more of their low-end products. Now, 15 months later, he's sold 215 guitars.

"It's something we're proud of," he said.

Family: Rarick is single. His parents are deceased.

Notable: Most of the guitar buyers are people just learning how to play. "It's amazing so many people want to learn to play guitar," Rarick said.

Quotable: "We'll take it in the teeth if we have to make a good deal. This store is my future."

Employees: Four, all part-time.

Contact: Music in the Micks can be reached at 790-1060. Hours at the store at the Mendenhall Mall are 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturdays and noon-5 p.m. Sundays.
