Juneau spikers split matches in Ketchikan

Posted: Tuesday, October 03, 2000

The Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears lost a Region V-Class 4A volleyball match for the first time in several years Friday in Ketchikan, but came back Saturday to gain a split of the series.

Juneau dropped Friday's match 14-16, 16-14, 15-5, 15-9. On Saturday, Juneau won 15-9, 10-15, 15-9, 15-11.

"We had our ups and downs," senior setter Janina Pelayo said. "Our confidence got the best of us on Friday. It was really low. We didn't have much. But we regrouped for Saturday."

Amy Neussl was Juneau's stat leader for the weekend, recording 23 kills and converting 36 of 39 serve attempts with eight aces.

Juneau doesn't have any returning letterwinners on the team this year after finishing second at state last season, and Pelayo said that inexperience played into the loss.

"We're still trying to develop our team chemistry," Pelayo said. "We've had so much movement between the varsity and JV (junior varsity)."

Juneau hosts its annual Juneau Invitational Volleyball Extravaganza (JIVE) tournament this weekend, with matches starting at 2 p.m. on Friday and continuing on Saturday. A bracket for the tournament is not finalized yet, Juneau coach Sandi Wagner said.

"We're all excited," Pelayo said. "We want to step up with more competition. We're going to try and be ready."
