Why is it that teachers do not yet have a contract? Why is it that the work teachers do is not valued by the school board? Why is it that teachers are so disrespected?

Why is it that teachers must beg for a raise? Why is it that teachers can no longer expect to automatically receive an increase in pay for additional training we receive? Why is it that we can no longer expect to automatically see an increase in salary for an extra year's work? Why is it that teachers at the top of the salary scale are the most devalued by the lack of additional compensation?

Why is it that Juneau School District lost several new teachers to other area school districts due to increased starting salaries? Why is it that the district cannot find skilled professionals to take some of our specialized positions that remain vacant?

Why is it that administrative salary increases are already budgeted for the '04-'05 school year? Why is it that administrators' wages continue to increase significantly when teacher salaries continue to stagnate? Why is it that administrators are not asked to take pay cuts or stay at the same pay level for years on end? Why is it that the district continues to create additional administrative positions?

Why is it that the district continues to push for a new high school when enrollment is dropping? Why is it that creative scheduling is not researched to minimize overcrowding in the current high school? Why is it that the district continues to say they will be able to pay for an additional building when the budget is already strapped (according to them)? Why is it that one board member said we will have two buildings we can be proud of after the new high school is built? Why is it that we cannot be proud of the other schools ... both new and old?

Why is it that the school board has very little credibility with the teachers, the assembly and the community? Why is it that the school board has gone to the assembly yet again for additional money for the new school? Why is it that the board has not been honest in their budgeting yet again?

Why is it that teachers are not valued? And ... why is it that not valuing teachers devalues both education and our children? Why is it that teachers are not adequately compensated for their work with our children ... our most precioius commodity?
