Clarification

A story in Thursday's Empire about a fatal truck-pedestrian accident stated that the driver had passed through the intersection and that police could not identify the driver but had not classified the accident as a hit-and-run. This information may have led readers to believe that the driver left the scene of the accident, when in fact police later said that the driver had stopped and stayed at the scene. The story was published after the Empire asked a police spokesman whether it was a hit-and-run and received the reply that it was not being classified that way but they were continuing to interview witnesses. He said he had no more information at the time. Later calls to police were not returned.
