Students and staff at Riverbend Elementary School will hold a harvest celebration Monday, culminating the efforts of their community garden and blueberry-picking trip to Eaglecrest this fall.
Last spring, John Smith III, a cultural educator at the school, started the process of converting an unused bicycle area into a garden. Last week, Smith converted the school's playground picnic tables into a smokehouse and has been smoking salmon donated by DIPAC.
The celebration will feature a menu with potatoes from the garden, salmon from the smokehouse and blueberries and jam from the berries picked at Eaglecrest. Food will be served to local Elders first, then provided to the students.
