I am writing to voice my concern over rumors that the airport is planning to close access to the Mendenhall Wetlands Dike Trail due to security reasons. I find that to be an unacceptable solution. That area is an extremely important part of this community. I walk there at lunch most days and can often be found there most weekends.
That trail is part of the reason I live in this community, access to the natural environment. The trail is vital to our community. The trail provides the only access to a public area: the Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge. This area is known for its spectacular beauty as well as its crucial importance as a flyway for waterfowl and a nursery area for many species of larval fish. It connects people from a cross-section of this community from dog walkers, to bird watchers, to runners, to hunters, to those who enjoy a sunny day on the wetlands. There is no other area like it in our vicinity.
If security is a concern, the area could be fenced better. Increased security measures in Juneau are not going to stop worldwide terrorism. Let's not let our fears overwhelm us and force us to lose one of the most spectacular, easily accessible natural areas in our community, one that serves as a focal point for walks and talks and interactions with our neighbors.
