The Juneau Boys Volleyball Club (JBVC) sent two teams to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, over the weekend where they participated in Whitehorse's informal "Early Bird" pre-season tournament.
This tournament was run by Volleyball Yukon for all secondary (high school) and middle school boys and girls volleyball teams in Whitehorse. It also had teams from surrounding communities, such as Dawson City, Yukon Territory, and Fort Nelson, British Columbia.
The JBVC "A" team was comprised of three seniors, six juniors and one sophomore. It was undefeated in match play (4-0) throughout the round-robin tournament in the 11th-12th grade division. Also, it did not lose a match in the informal scrimmages on Sunday.
The Juneau "B" team, comprised of six JDHS freshmen and one eighth-grader, went 3-1 in the ninth-10th grade division, losing only once in a very tight match.
The tournament, played under international rules, was held at Porter Creek and FH Collins Secondary schools in Whitehorse on Friday night and all day on Saturday. Both JBVC teams also competed in informal scrimmages against several Whitehorse high school teams on Sunday at Porter Creek in order to gain additional competitive experience.
The scores for the Juneau "A" team included a victory over Fort Nelson (best two out of three games), 25-18, 27-25; a victory over Vanier Catholic (two out of three), 25-12, 25-14; a victory over Robert Service of Dawson City (two out of three), 25-16, 25-13; and a victory over Porter Creek (three out of five), 25-21, 18-25, 23-25, 25-14, 15-7.
The scores for the Juneau "B" team included a victory over Vanier Catholic Red, 25-12, 15-25, 15-12; a victory over Robert Service, 25-23, 25-12; a loss to Porter Creek Red, 23-25, 25-4, 14-16; and a victory over FH Collins, 25-21, 25-23.
This tournament was the first opportunity for the JBVC boys to play against other boys their same age. In Juneau -- since boys volleyball is not a school-sponsored sport and there are no other organized boys volleyball clubs throughout Alaska -- JBVC teams compete once each week against adult men in the Juneau Parks and Recreation's (JP&R) indoor volleyball leagues.
The JBVC "A" team is currently competing in the JP&R top men's Division 1 on Tuesday nights at the Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. The JBVC "B" team is currently competing in JP&R Division 2 on Thursday nights in the JDHS auxiliary gym. Last year was the first time JBVC sent a team to Whitehorse for the "Early Bird" tournament. That JBVC team ended up with a 2-2 record.
The JBVC "A" team members who went to Whitehorse were seniors Craig Kitka, Ryan Monagle, Eric Peterson; juniors Andrew Bauer, Andrew Croan, Adam Peterson, Collin Rielly, Dmitriy Stepanov, Kyle Thibodeau; and sophomore Bryan Diebels.
The JBVC "B" team members who went to Whitehorse were freshmen Phillip Barnett, Chris Davin, Jeremy Eames, Rob Hickok, Will Norman, Charlie Williams; and eighth grader Evan Thibodeau. Team member Richard Millay was unable to attend.
