Midnight Suns Fastpitch Softball Association fall tryouts - Fall tryouts for the 2005 season take place on Saturday, Oct. 2, Sunday, Oct. 3, and Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the Riverbend Elementary School gym. On Saturday, tryout times are 12:30 p.m. for ages 16U and 18U girls, 1:30 p.m. for age 14U, 3 p.m. for age 12U and 4:30 p.m. for age 10U. On Sunday, the times are 12:30 p.m. for age 10U girls, 1:30 p.m. for age 12U, 3 p.m. for age 14U and 4:30 p.m. for age 16U. On Wednesday, there is an all-ages make-up tryout at 6:30 p.m., a parent meeting at 7:30 p.m., and at 8 p.m. team calendar pictures will be taken for all ages. Volunteer youth basketball coaches needed - Coaches are needed to help develop players in the Juneau Parks and Rec youth basketball league. The season runs from Oct. 2 through Dec. 11, so potential coaches need to make contact with Parks and Rec this week. Two coaches are needed for age 14-18 boys teams, one coach is needed for an age 12-13 boys team and a co-coach is needed for an age 10-11 boys team. Volunteer applications and background checks are required before working with a team. Midnight Suns Baseball Club registration and annual meeting - Meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the Floyd Dryden Middle School library to sign up. The Midnight Suns program is for youth baseball players and they must be 11 years old by Aug. 1, 2005, to join this year. Juneau-Douglas High School Dance Team clinics/tryouts - The JDHS Dance Team will hold a series of clinics leading up to team tryouts next month. Clinics are open to all JDHS students and will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7; from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 9; from 7-9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 11; and from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12. Juneau Douglas Ice Association youth hockey registration - Registration for the youth hockey program (ages 5-18) and the learn hockey program (ages 4-18) is in progress. Paid basketball referees needed - The Juneau Parks and Recreation Department is seeking referees for its youth basketball program (ages 8-18). Applicants must be at least 14 years old to officiate, and games start on Oct. 25. A good knowledge of the game is helpful, and prior experience as a referee is not necessary. Training is available. Mount Jumbo preschool open gym - Preschool open gyms for children ages 1-6 and an adult parent or caregiver take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through April. There must be at least one adult present for every four kids. There is a $1 per child fee, or punchcards for $10 and $50 can be bought at the gym, which is located at 909 4th Street in Douglas. Tricycles, mats, balls, a Little Tykes climber, building blocks and a kid-sized basketball hoop are available. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - New climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Recreational badminton - Auke Bay group: This group meets from 8-10 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays at the Auke Bay Community School gym. Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center guided hikes - The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center offers twice-daily, one-hour guided hikes on the Trail of Time.
