Participation in the election of Juneau's next Assembly members is critical. The city faces a significant projected shortfall in income over the next several years, which means many tough decisions for the next Assembly.
As the outgoing District 2 Assembly member, I am supporting Stephanie Madsen for my seat. Stephanie has the elected, professional and civic experience to make wise decisions for the people of Juneau. She shepherded a city government through tough economic times into prosperity. She has the tenacity to stick to her values and not be swayed by pressure from her peers or by expensive, though alluring, projects. I have worked hard the last three years to hold the line on excessive city spending, and I believe Stephanie will easily and thoughtfully do the same.
We hear candidates talk of "independence" and being "beholden to none." Both candidates for the District 2 seat are partisan politicians. Both have contributed to campaigns within their parties and have been endorsed by their respective local political parties. As a registered Libertarian, I have the perspective to see how independence within a seemingly nonpartisan campaign works. In fact, I am not even invited to attend meetings of Republicans or Democrats.
So, I advise the voters to look beyond the rhetoric of independence and make a decision based on what you know to be true about the candidates. Although Madsen and I are not members of the same political party, we share many similar views, and her track record proves she will not only defend Juneau's taxpayers but will lead the city toward financial security and success as a community.
If you are a registered voter, please vote this Tuesday. I am supporting Stephanie Madsen and David Stone because Juneau needs elected officials who will make our economy a priority. We can't afford anything else.
