KAKE - A 42-year-old Kake man died when he crashed his bicycle into a telephone pole.

Roderick D. Cavanaugh died in the southeast Alaska village Saturday.

Alaska State Troopers investigators say Cavanaugh was riding a bicycle down a steep hill on Totem Road and failed to navigate a turn onto Silver Spur Road.

He crossed the intersection and smashed into the telephone pole on the other side.

Cavanaugh was not wearing a helmet.

Troopers say alcohol use was involved.

Cavanaugh's body will be transported to Anchorage for an autopsy.

Kake is a village of 500 on the northwest coast of Kupreanof Island 38 miles northwest of Petersburg and 95 miles southwest of Juneau.
