Geoff Nordlund was the only Ketchikan player to make the Northern Lights Conference-South's all-conference football first team announced earlier this week.
Nordlund was honored at two positions, running back and return specialist, for the first-year Kings who posted a winless season. Jeff Jackson of Kenai was named the conference's offensive player of the year, with Soldotna's Matt Deraeve the defensive player of the year and Billy Moiles the lineman of the year. Soldotna coach Rob Dimick and Kenai coach Jim Beeson shared coach of the year honors.
As a first-team selection, Nordlund is now eligible to be considered for the all-state teamthat will be announced late this month. Only those athletes to make their conference's first team are considered for all-state honors.
Nordlund was also the only Ketchikan player to pick up second-team all-conference honors, again at two positions. Nordlund was named to the second team as both a defensive end/outside linebacker and as a punter.
Ketchikan's Raymond Secrest was an honorable mention selection at two positions kicker and defensive end while teammate Chris Eide was an honorable mention selection at fullback.
The Northern Lights Conference-South is the second of the state's four football conferences to announce its all-conference team.
Earlier this week, the Greatland Conference team was announced and several Sitka players were honored. The Cook Inlet Football Conference's team will be announced later this week, and several Juneau-Douglas High School players should be listed. The Railbelt/Northern Lights Conference-North team won't be announced until next week.
Sitka, which was also a first-year team, claimed four positions on the Greatland Conference's first team, with Matt Mangini honored at wide receiver and return specialist, Thor Hartwig at defensive end/outside linebacker and Mike Loucks at interior lineman on defense. Those three Wolves will all be eligible for the all-state team.
The Wolves also placed four players on the second-team all-conference squad, with Charles Backus at center, Josh Stevens at running back, Travis Bradshaw at quarterback and John Forcherner at inside linebacker. Dan Stockel was honorable mention at inside linebacker for Sitka.
Nikiski garnered most of the big conference awards, with David Holloway earning offensive player of the year honors, Gabe Lavigueur lineman of the year and Scott Anderson coach of the year. Travis Webb of Houston was defensive player of the year and Seward's Darian Draper was utility player of the year.
