Juneau-Douglas High School volleyball JIVE tournament: Juneau Invitational Volleyball Extravaganza, an eight-team tournament with two-game round-robin matches starting at 3 p.m. at the Juneau-Douglas High School main and auxiliary gyms. Juneau plays Ketchikan at 5 p.m., Skyview at 6 p.m., Kotzebue at 8 p.m. and Wrangell at 9 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 7

Juneau-Douglas High School volleyball JIVE tournament: Juneau Invitational Volleyball Extravaganza, an eight-team tournament with two-game round-robin matches starting at 8 a.m. at the Juneau-Douglas High School main and auxiliary gyms. Juneau plays Sitka at 9 a.m., Craig at noon and North Pole at 2 p.m. Best-three-games-out-of-five championship-round matches start at 4 p.m. with the seventh-eighth place match in the auxiliary gym and the fifth-sixth place match in the main gym. The third-fourth place match is 6 p.m. in the main gym, and the championship match is 8 p.m. in the main gym.

SERR 11th Annual Alaska Coastal Homes Run: Meet at 9:30 a.m. at False Outer Point Recreation Area, race starts at 10 a.m. Distances of five kilometers and 10K. Pregistration fee $5, day-of-race entry fee $8. Info: John McConnochie, 789-2181.

Juneau Parks and Recreation Saturday hike: This Saturday's hike is an easy 9-mile trek along the Herbert Glacier Trail. The hike departs from the Herbert River, near the trailhead, and wanders through spruce and hemlock forests, along low glacier moraines to the terminus of Herbert Glacier. Mountain goats are sometimes seen along the cliffs above the trail. Wear waterproof hiking or rubber boots, warm layers of clothing and bring plenty of food and water. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Herbert Glacier Trailhead, Mile 28 Glacier Highway. No dogs or firearms allowed. Info: Juneau Parks and Recreation, 586-5226.

Juneau Alpine Club glacier walk or Mount Bullard climb: A high-energy output climb of eight miles taking about 10 hours. Ice ax and crampons needed. For more info and times, contact event leaders Tim Arness, 789-9119, or Bill Forrest, 789-3008.


Juneau-Douglas High School drill/dance team tryouts: Clinic times are 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 30; from 7-9 p.m. on Monday-Wednesday, Oct. 2-4; and from 4-9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5 at Marie Drake Gym. Info: Jodi Barnes, 463-7388.

Basketball referees to meet: Local basketball officials will meet from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from Oct. 11 through Nov. 8 to prepare for the upcoming seasons. Juneau Parks and Recreation adult basketball team registration: Manager packets for the 2000-2001 adult basketball season are currently available at the Juneau Parks and Recreation office, on the second floor of the municipal building, Room 218. Team registration will take place at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Assembly Chambers. Late registration will be taken on Oct. 20, but a $10 late fee will be charged for teams registering after Oct. 19. Space is limited in the leagues. Info: Juneau Parks and Recreation, 586-5226.

Women's Classic Basketball League registration: Registration forms are due by Friday, Oct. 27, for this league designed for women who are older, new to the game or have less time available to play in the upper-level leagues. Preseason practices begin in November and teams play one game a week (Wednesdays) for 10 weeks through January. Fee of $47.25 per player (includes tax) covers part of team fee and numbered shirt. Open Gyms

Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School: Youth open gym, Saturday 10/7 from 8-11 p.m. No cost. Adult volleyball/basketball open gyms, cost is $4. Sundays (10/8) and Fridays (10/6), from 7-9 p.m. Also on Mondays (10/9 and 10/16) from 8-10 p.m. Volleyball/basketball court rentals available Saturday mornings. Open Badminton Gym: Every Friday from 7-9 p.m. at Gastineau School until Oct. 13. All skill levels welcome. Cost $2.50 per person; $5 for families. Info: David, 586-3070 eves.
