Parks and Rec department wants several volunteers

Do you like to dig in the dirt, talk about totems or coach pitchers?

The City and Borough of Juneau, Department of Parks and Recreation, is recruiting volunteers for landscaping, special event assistant, museum assistants, park projects and youth sports coaching.

Benefits include work experience that can go on a resume, training, socializing and community improvements, as well as a feeling of making a personal contribution of your particular talents to your home town. Time commitment varies with each program.

Submissions requested for a community events calendar

Events are being collected for the 2002 Special Events calendar.

This calendar lists dates, contact persons and other relevant information about Juneau and Southeast Alaska events such as runs, bike rides, races and skating.

The Zach Gordon Youth Center is accepting submissions. Submit information to Kristi West by calling 586-2635. Deadline is Nov. 3. The calendar is available on the Juneau Web page at

United Way to hold benefit event for the Sept. 11th Fund

A local benefit is scheduled for the Sept. 11th Fund, a fund begun by United Way and the New York Community Trust to benefit families of those killed or injured in the terrorism on Sept. 11. The fund was established to mobilize financial resources to respond to the immediate and longer-term needs of victims and their families.

One hundred percent of all contributions will go directly there, said Nancy Woizeschke, one of the organizers.

The benefit takes the form of a spaghetti feed and dessert auction, 4-8 p.m., on Oct. 7 at Chapel by the Lake. Suggested donation is $7 per person for spaghetti or $20 per family. For details, call Robin at 586-1746.

University supporters sought for Edith R. Bullock award

Nominations are now being accepted for the $15,000 Edith R. Bullock Prize for Excellence.

The annual award recognizes and rewards an individual who has demonstrated excellence in support of the University of Alaska system. Anyone may be nominated.
