I am a student at JDHS. On Wednesday, Sept. 24, I got a chance to meet some of the candidates running for the School Board. One of the candidates got my attention with what he was saying. That candidate was Sam Guthrie.
I noticed that even though Sam Guthrie didn't want to push a certain religion in our school, he spoke about how he was a good Christian. I think that he might have been unconsciously pushing his religion in his speech, being as how most of what he said had to do with religion. I think that all the talk of his religion detracted a bit from the issues.
One thing I liked about him was the fact that he thought of an interesting idea to make the old Kmart building into the new high school. I don't think that idea will be considered, but it was good that he was "thinking outside the box," as he would say.
All in all, I think Sam Guthrie had some good ideas in his speech, but I felt that his religion was getting in the way of the main message he was trying to say.
