Voter registration deadline approaches

JUNEAU - Sunday is the final day for voter registration for the Nov. 7 election.

The state Division of Elections will have office hours Saturday and Sunday to register voters and to change registrations.

Registration also can be done through city clerks' offices, public libraries and the Department of Motor Vehicles, according to division director Janet Kowalski. Voters who change their registration after the Sunday deadline will have to vote a questioned ballot on Nov. 7.

The division's office in Juneau, on the sixth floor of the Court Plaza Building at 240 Main St., will be open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and noon-4 p.m. Sunday. Registration forms also are available at the division's Web site, www.elections.state.ak.us. More information is available at 465-4611.

The Nov. 7 ballot includes the president, the House of Representatives seat for Alaska, all state House seats, some state Senate seats, as well as measures on such issues as managing wildlife, capping property taxes and legalizing marijuana.

Regulators OK phone competition

JUNEAU - It's official: Juneau is open for competition in local telephone service.

The Regulatory Commission of Alaska on Thursday approved an interconnection agreement between incumbent provider Alaska Communications Systems and General Communication Inc. GCI says it will start serving the Juneau market next year.

The commission rejected ACS' argument that the rate structure under which GCI will pay for using ACS' equipment should be considered temporary.

ACS has filed suit in both federal and state court to block enforcement of the interconnection order. The company contends it would not be fairly compensated for the use of its system, while GCI says the litigation is a desperate move by anti-competitive utility.

The interconnection order also includes Fairbanks and North Pole.
