Political balance at school events

On the morning of Sept. 26, the Juneau-Douglas High School held a meet the city candidates' forum. Candidates Early, Summers, Cahill, Sanford, Green, Anderson and Powell sitting in for Doll, as well as all the School Board candidates attended. Along with the candidates, Sen. Kim Elton and Rep. Beth Kertula, both members of the Democratic Party, were in attendance. Why was no representative from the Republican Party present? If representatives were asked and they could not come due to previously scheduled events, the inclusion of the Democratic body on its own was inappropriate, and it is incumbent on the part of the school to be sure there is balanced representation.

Any true balanced educational activity for students would have representation from all sides. Ideally, the Assembly and school board are supposed to be nonpartisan. With no balance to the full force showing of the local Democratic Party, this appears to be partisan politics, bordering on indoctrination in our schools.
