Juneau-Douglas High School volleyball - The Crimson Bears host their annual Juneau Invitational Volleyball Extravaganza this weekend at the Juneau-Douglas High School gym. Cordova, Kodiak, Craig, Mount Edgecumbe, Wrangell, Haines, Petersburg, Metlakatla, Sitka and Ketchikan will all participate. Games start 3 p.m. Friday and 8:50 a.m. Saturday.

Juneau-Douglas High School swimming and diving - The Crimson Bears host a special tri-meet with Sitka and West Valley on Friday and Saturday at the Augustus Brown Swimming Pool. Times TBA.

Midnight Suns Baseball Club registration - The Midnight Suns Baseball Club will be having its annual membership and registration meeting on 6 p.m. Wed., Oct. 11, at the Floyd Dryden Library. The Under-14 group will travel to Arizona in the spring for tournament play and the Under-12 team will travel in September to Washington for a tournament. Midnight Suns Softball Club registration - The Midnight Suns Fastpitch Softball club is holding registration for the 2007 season. All girls interesting in advancing their softball skills and playing against players form other communities are invited to attend. A parent meeting and Calendar Photo will also be taken. Registration will take place Sat., Oct. 14, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Riverbend Elementary School gym and Sun., Oct. 15 from noon to 3 p.m. There will also be a parent meeting from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. and the photo shoot from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the gym on Oct. 15. The fee for players in the 10-and-under to 14-and-under levels is $125 while the 16-and-under to 18-and-under players is $75. Fees cover off-season gym rentals, batting cage expenses, indoor equipment, miscellaneous expenses and sweats. Fees are due at registration. Info: Mindy Barry, 723-7878.
Juneau Parks and Recreation Youth Indoor Soccer registration - Roster spots are still available for indoor soccer players ages 8-18. There are weeknight practices and Saturday games from Sept. 30 to Dec. 9. Info: 586-5226.
Juneau Parks and Recreation Adult Ordway Basketball Team Registration - Ordway Basketball team registration will take place Thursday, Oct. 19, at 6 p.m. at the Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School Commons. Late registration will take place Oct. 20 at the Juneau Parks and Registration office from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. League play begins Nov. 12 and will run through the second week of February. Women's Classic Basketball League - Preseason practice begin in November for the Women's Classic Basketball League. The league is designed for women who enjoy basketball or are new to the game but looking for a non-aggressive league. Games will be played through Jan. 31, once a week on Wednesdays for a total of 10 games. Cost is $47.25 per player and includes use of jersey. Registration forms are due Oct. 27. Juneau-Douglas Basketball Officials Association meetings - The Juneau-Douglas Basketball Officials Association meetings start Oct. 11. The meetings will be every Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Room C109 at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Interested basketball referees for the adult Ordway City League or high school officiating must attend every Wednesday. Ordway begins play on Nov. 12. Juneau-Douglas High School dance team clinics - The Juneau-Douglas High School dance team is starting training clinics for team tryouts. They will take place Oct. 3 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Marie Drake; Oct. 5 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Marie Drake, Oct. 7 from noon to 2 p.m. at Marie Drake; Oct. 9 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the JDHS auxillary gym; Oct. 10 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Marie Drake; Oct. 11 from 5 p.m. until it's done at Marie Drake. Alaska Day Basketball Clinic - Registration is open for middle school and high school students to attend University of Alaska Southeast's Alaska Day Basketball Clinic over the school break from Oct. 18-20. Perspectives on Parenting Student Athletes - University of Alaksa Southeast is hosting this free talk from Jerry Krause, Director of Men's Basketball Operations from Gonzaga University, from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. in room 116 of the UAS Student Rec Center on Wednesday, Oct. 18. Start Smart Program - The Start Smart Sports Development Program is for boys and girls ages 4-5 to prepare them for organized sports without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Parents work with their child to learn basic skills such as throwing, catching, kicking and batting for sports like soccer, baseball, etc. It is a six-week program, one hour per week on Saturdays at Mt. Jumbo Gym from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. running from Oct. 14 to Nov. 18. Fee is $25 and each child will receive a t-shirt, workbook and a participant manual. Register at www.juneau.org/parksrec. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - Climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Evening masters swimming program - The Augustus Brown pool hosts a twice-weekly evening masters swimming program. The program will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and is designed to promote and improve the physical and mental well-being of adults age 19-older. Basketball/volleyball court rentals available - The Juneau Community Schools program has basketball/volleyball court rental times available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. The cost to rent the court is $20 per hour, which must be paid at the time of rental. This is for adult activities only. Info: Juneau Community Schools, 463-1717.
Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
