Merijke Coenraad and Nathan Graves came away with individual singles titles Sunday after a weekend of tough matches and friendly rivalries in the Juneau High School Tennis Championships at the Juneau Racket Club.
This year marked the fourth JHSTC, which stands in as the team's de facto regional tournament. As the only Southeast tennis squad, and with a membership swelling to roughly 50 players this year, coach Amy Skilbred uses the tournament to evaluate her state-bound members and build experience for the team's younger members.
"It's a great culminating event and it gives kids something to look forward to at the season's end," Skilbred said. "With our main and consolation draws, all of the kids can have some success and find out what it takes to play in a tournament-type environment."
The top four members from both the boys and girls teams will travel to Anchorage for the the 2008 Alaska State Championships next Friday and Saturday.
