Mat-Su Borough sales tax on today's ballot

Posted: Tuesday, October 06, 2009

WASILLA - Voters in Matanuska-Susitna Borough will decide today whether to adopt a sales tax of 3 percent.

If the ordinance is approved, the tax would take effect in July 2010 and expire in three years unless it's re-approved by voters. The tax would only apply to purchases of less than $1,000.

To entice voters, the ordinance includes a reduction in the property tax rate.

The get the ordinance on the ballot, the Mat-Su Borough Assembly had to override a veto by the mayor of Wasilla. Shoppers there already pay a 2.5 percent city sales tax.
