Houston city clerk resigns on election day

HOUSTON - Houston City Clerk Steve Cunningham has resigned on Election Day.

Deputy Mayor Lance Wilson says it appears Cunningham improperly gave supporters of a recall effort against former Mayor Roger Purcell assistance in using the right wording for an official recall petition. Purcell stepped down in June after being faced with the recall.

Cunningham says he didn't do anything wrong and that one of his jobs as clerk is to provide information to the public about petitions.

Voters are deciding several propositions in Tuesday's election in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.
