TALKEETNA - An Anchorage man died on the way to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center after initially surviving a 300-foot fall from the Hurricane Gulch bridge.

Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said witnesses saw 25-year-old Jon Starheim leave his car Sunday and leap off the bridge that runs over the Chulitna River.

Starheim landed at the bottom of the gulch and was seen moving around. Emergency crews used ropes to pull him back to the roadway. Dennis Brodigan, emergency services director for the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, told the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman that Starheim held on for quite some time, but went into cardiac arrest while dangling from the bridge.

Medics performed CPR on the way to the hospital, but Starheim died before arrival.
