FAIRBANKS - A Fairbanks woman has been sentenced to one year in jail for her role in a mail theft ring.

Jennifer Curry had pleaded guilty to felony methamphetamine possession.

There were more than 700 reports of mail theft in the Fairbanks area late last year. Cases ranged in severity from displaced mail being found at the side of the road to stolen checks and credit cards.

Police said drugs were the primary motive behind the thefts. Fairbanks International Airport police broke the case in January when they stopped a man who claimed he traded meth for a shotgun and other people's mail.

One man convicted in the theft ring is serving a five-year sentence, while two other suspects will be sentenced later this month. Four other people are awaiting trial.
