Police seeking gun's owner
Juneau - A handgun is awaiting its owner in the safekeeping department of the Juneau police station.
A local resident found the full-size weapon in "a nice case" in the parking lot of a Douglas apartment complex on Sept. 16, according to Lt. Walt Boman of the Juneau Police Department.
"It looks as if someone set it down to get out his keys, was distracted and drove off without it," Boman said. "We'd like people to check their homes to see if they are missing a fairly new gun. If they can identify it, we will return it to them," he said. Boman can be reached at 586-0600.
City closing park restrooms
Juneau - The city is closing restrooms in the parks this month so the water doesn't freeze.
Restrooms at Cope Park, Twin Lakes and Capital Park were to be closed by last weekend. Riverside and Dimond park restrooms should be closed by Oct. 20. Restrooms at Adair-Kennedy, Melvin and Evergreen Cemetery should be closed by Oct. 27, and at Savikko Park/Sandy Beach by Nov. 3.
House candidate plans campaign tour
Juneau - Terry Pardee of Haines, Republican candidate for the state House of Representatives in District 5, said today he's beginning his first campaign trip throughout the sprawling Southeast collection of three dozen towns and villages.
Pardee, 53, a borough assemblyman and school board member for two years, said he'll be campaigning in Skagway today and Hoonah on Tuesday, and then using Sitka as a hub. He's challenging two-term Democratic Rep. Albert Kookesh of Angoon.
"I just didn't feel we were getting enough attention and representation up here," Pardee said. He cited solid waste management, annexation, tourism and education funding as areas in which he says the incumbent hasn't responded to concerns in Haines. Noting that Kookesh took over chairmanship of the Sealaska board of directors earlier this year, Pardee said: "I don't think he's got time to do the job."
Kookesh has said that as a member of the House minority he is more often blocking legislation than proposing it. "Maybe we need a representative that's part of the majority," Pardee said.
Pardee is a marine surveyor, commercial fisherman and assistant butcher at a supermarket.
