JUNEAU -- The Tlingit-Haida Central Council recently announced the restructuring of its electrical authority into a nonprofit rural utility cooperative.
The THCC executive council met in late September to discuss turning over ownership of the newly formed cooperative to customers. The council adopted a resolution to make the change and allow its owner-members to elect a board of directors to ensure democratic control, according to a press release from the council. The new organization will join more than 900 electric utility cooperatives nationwide, including 16 in Alaska.
