Vehicle kills black bear cub

Posted: Tuesday, October 09, 2001

A young black bear was struck and killed about 9 p.m. Saturday as it crossed Glacier Highway at mile 24.

The bear died instantly of head injuries, said Neil Barten, area management biologist for the state Department of Fish and Game. The bear was a female cub of this year, weighing about 50 pounds, he said.

The carcass will be frozen and used to train new recruits for fish and wildlife protection troopers, Barten said.

Police said they did not find a vehicle in the area when they arrived shortly after the accident.
