Four years ago, my friends and neighbors - voting on the basis of reputation, good advertising and avoidance of each and every divisive issue facing this state - helped elect Frank Murkowski as governor. They made a big, although then reasonable, mistake.

The polls now indicate that they may make the same mistake this year. The Republican candidate for governor is side-stepping or taking both sides on every controversial issue. Her campaign consists of glittering generalities, pleasing photographs and an espousal of all things Alaskans love. I hope that my friends and neighbors won't fall for the same trick twice.
